Abstract For patients with type 2 diabetes, the evaluation of pulse waveform characteristics is helpful to understand changes in arterial stiffness. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis of pulse waveform parameters. Here, we aimed to investigate the changes in pulse waveform characteristics in patients with type 2 diabetes due to increased arterial stiffness. In this study, 25 patients with type 2 diabetes and 50 healthy subjects were selected based on their clinical history. Age, height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse pressure were collected as the subjects’ basic characteristics. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV)… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.2, pp. 157-167, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.04067
Abstract OSAHS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome) is a respiratory disease mainly characterized by limited and repeated pauses of breathing in sleep. Currently, the optimal treatment is to apply CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) ventilation on the upper airway of the patient through a household respiratory machine. However, if the ventilator mask is designed improperly, it might cause the residue and repeated inhalation of CO2, which will exert an adverse impact on the therapeutic effect. Present research numerically analyzed the CO2 transportation inside a commercial ventilator mask (Mirage SoftGel, ResMed, Australia) based on the reconstructed 3D numerical… More >

    A. Parassuram1,*, P. Somasundaram1
    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.2, pp. 169-187, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.01720
Abstract A continuous-time Model Predictive Controller was proposed using Kautz function in order to improve the performance of Load Frequency Control (LFC). A dynamic model of an interconnected power system was used for Model Predictive Controller (MPC) design. MPC predicts the future trajectory of the dynamic model by calculating the optimal closed loop feedback gain matrix. In this paper, the optimal closed loop feedback gain matrix was calculated using Kautz function. Being an Orthonormal Basis Function (OBF), Kautz function has an advantage of solving complex pole-based nonlinear system. Genetic Algorithm (GA) was applied to optimally tune More >

    Xu Liu1, Guojian Shao1, Xingxing Yue2,*, Qingbin Yang3, Jingbo Su4
    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.2, pp. 189-211, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.03947
Abstract This paper aims to apply a virtual boundary element method (VBEM) to solve the inverse problems of three-dimensional heat conduction in orthotropic media. This method avoids the singular integrations in the conventional boundary element method, and can be treated as a potential approach for solving the inverse problems of the heat conduction owing to the boundary-only discretization and semi-analytical algorithm. When the VBEM is applied to the inverse problems, the numerical instability may occur if a virtual boundary is not properly chosen. The method encounters a highly ill-conditioned matrix for the larger distance between the… More >

Abstract Studies of problems involving physical anisotropy are applied in sciences and engineering, for instance, when the thermal conductivity depends on the direction. In this study, the multigrid method was used in order to accelerate the convergence of the iterative methods used to solve this type of problem. The asymptotic convergence factor of the multigrid was determined empirically (computer aided) and also by employing local Fourier analysis (LFA). The mathematical model studied was the 2D anisotropic diffusion equation, in which ε > 0 was the coefficient of a nisotropy. The equation was discretized by the Finite… More >

    Zhengwei Li1,2, Jianli Wang1,*, Tao Chen1, Bin Wang1, Yuanhao Wu1
    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.2, pp. 271-286, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmc.2018.04005
Abstract With the development of adaptive optics and post restore processing techniques, large aperture ground-based telescopes can obtain high-resolution images (HRIs) of targets. The pose of the space target can be estimated from HRIs by several methods. As the target features obtained from the image are unstable, it is difficult to use existing methods for pose estimation. In this paper a method based on real-time target model matching to estimate the pose of space targets is proposed. First, the physically-constrained iterative deconvolution algorithm is used to obtain HRIs of the space target. Second, according to the More >
